I hope that all of you had (and are having) a very enjoyable summer. I’m never really sure when the summer ends. For me, the summer ended once school began for my kids; surely it must be over when every morning begins with trying to motivate a five-year-old to get dressed for kindergarten. On the other hand late August and September tend to be the hottest months in the Hill Country so it is hard to really think that fall is beginning. Regardless, we have been blessed with a relatively temperate season and lakes with ample water --- what a change from last year!

I want thank everyone who helped out with our Lake Travis cruise last month. As we did last year, we rented a two-decker party barge from Just for Fun for a three-hour cruise and swimming. Although the turn Continued...

out was a bit lower than we hoped (due primarily to a weird confluence of conflicting events), it was a really enjoyable event. We left Emerald Point Marina, cruised around Starnes Island, and then anchored in a cove to let everyone visit and swim.

In September we will begin our monthly APS meetings. Our first meeting will be on September 21 at Joe’s Crab Shack. John Causey and Bill Smith are working on a special presentation that documents APS’s involvement in the AquaPalooza event. I think everyone will find this interesting and there will likely be many entertaining war stories told. I am looking forward to a great fall. I hope all of you can find the time to attend our first meeting.

From the Executive Department

The Fall of 2010 is here, and you're probably wondering how the summer passed so quickly while leaving its hot dry weather still with us here in Central Texas.

The Summer of 2010 was a busy time for Austin Power Squadron, and time passes quickly when you're having fun. Let's recall some of our Summer events, shall we? Coop Charting Success at Matagorda Bay.
Chairman Clint O’Connor is encouraging our participation in upcoming Fall Coop Charting events at Rockport and Port Isabel. Clint says if we get half as many participants as we did for Matagorda we will be doing very well for the year. Our reports from the Matagorda Bay charting event were accepted at NOS, with the result that these Austin members have already qualified for the Coop Charting Honor Roll: Clint O’Connor, Gary Guilbert, Stephen Schmidt, Charles Strong, Bill McNeil, Charles Mohle, Max Werkenthin III, Ginny Strong, T.W. Cook, Allen Hearn, Doug Hearn, and Heather Hearn. In other words, all participants from Austin qualified from this single event.

Aquapalooza Exploits

You've heard this before, but congratulations again to Chairman Bob Stubbs and all USPS members and friends who helped with USPS participation in Sea Ray's Aquapalooza event in July.

Upcoming Coop Charting Events.

Clint is encouraging our participation in upcoming future Coop Charting events at Rockport and Port Isabel, and says that if we get even half as many participants as we did for Matagorda, we will be doing very well for the year. Check with Clint for the latest information on future events. The upcoming impending events are:

  • Rockport – September 24-25 (Fort Worth, Coastal Bend, & San Antonio squadrons hosting) – Contact person: clorinda@flash.net

The seminar “Onboard Weather Forecasting” was presented by Doug Hearn on Tuesday, August 24th at Travis County West Service Center. Thirteen members and three non-members attended the seminar. Thanks to Doug for a very informative presentation.

The next seminar has been changed to “Boating On Rivers, Lakes and Locks”. The date, time and place will remain the same. It will be on September 28th, from 7 PM to 9 PM, at Travis County West Service Center, 4501 RM 620 North. This seminar covers special navigation rules for rivers, river currents, “reading” a river, jetties, using locks, communicating with lock masters and bridge tenders. Please pre-register for this seminar by calling our Austin Power Squadron Call Notes number, 512-343-BOAT. Just leave your name on the message recorder. This seminar is also open to the public.

The Seamanship course will start on Monday, September 13th , 7 PM to 9 PM, at Travis County West Service Center and continue to meet on Mondays through October 4th. Members that are eligible for this course will be notified. The emphasis of this course is on higher level boating skills, docking and undocking your boat, navigational rules of the road and marlinspike. We hope to be able to organize an on-the-water cruise this Fall for the Seamanship students to practice what they learned after completion of the class. Contact Christine Geist at cgeist@austin.rr.com to pre-register.

From the Administrative Department
The August membership event, a cruise of Lake Travis, was a success, especially for those who took advantage of the chance to get in a cooling swim. Don't miss the photos of the event, provided courtesy of the Squadron photographer, Matt Syptak.

This month the Squadron returns to our normal schedule of monthly membership meetings. We are kicking off the Fall season at Joe's Crab Shack on Research Blvd. Three menu choices will be available: Fish & Shrimp; Joe's Steak Deal (8 oz top sirloin); or Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken or Shrimp. Join us to see photos of the recent Aquapalooza event on Lake Travis. RSVP 266-1638 or your Calling Committee.

Happy Birthday!
